Ballarat Acknowledgment of Country student artwork unveiled

Aboriginal artwork created by local students has been installed at the Academy Ballarat centre. Students met with Academy and Department of Education staff to celebrate.

We love a good news story! In early March 2024, we celebrated the 'coming together' for our #Ballarat Acknowledgment of Country project. Thoughtfully designed and developed by students from Forest Street Primary School and Beaufort Secondary College, their bespoke Ballarat Acknowledgment of Country and accompanying artwork has been enlarged for permanent display in the Ballarat courtyard area.

Under the guidance and support of student wellbeing worker, artist and emerging Wadawurrung leader Macaylah Johnson, both indigenous and non-indigenous students explored colour, the meaning behind words and how art and language could be used to create a welcoming and inclusive space.

In addition to talented local students we were also pleased to host Macaylah Johnson, Central Highlands Koorie Education Officer Deb Clark, a number of Wadawurrung elders and the Sebastopol Primary School choir.
