We are thrilled to share that our very own Master Teacher in Residence for Technologies, Anam Javed, has been inducted into the 2023 Victorian Honour Roll of Women, at a ceremony held at the Arts Centre last night.

In total, 22 women were officially inducted this year and celebrated for their leadership, tenacity and unwavering determination to advance gender equality and make Victoria a better state.

Anam was recognised in the Trailblazer category for her work in community and educational leadership – and seen as an inspiring role model leading the way for women in a traditionally male-dominated field.

As one of the Academy’s 16 Master Teachers this year, Anam works within the Academy’s Teaching Excellence Program (TEP) and is instrumental in raising the recognition and importance of STEM professionals and educators, with a focus on women in STEM.

“I value the opportunity to use STEM education to level the playing field for all students across all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and boost the number of women in STEM leadership roles,” she said.

Born and raised in Pakistan, Anam moved to Australia as an international student at the age of 18. She is one of a handful of immigrants to be inducted into the Honour Roll.

“Growing up in a patriarchal environment, I saw leadership manifested in different ways,” she said.

“My grandmother taught me the value of unflinching strength in the face of entrenched patriarchy; and my mother taught me the value of hard work accompanied by poise and grace. I am nowhere near achieving either, but I continue to at least try to emulate both.”

"I am hopeful that this recognition will further enable women from culturally and linguistically diverse communities to advocate for their communities, and so that we can truly celebrate our state's cultural diversity in a meaningful and authentic manner,” she said.

Congratulations to Anam - thank you for your ongoing contributions, and for being an outstanding role model for women in a range of leadership roles across the state.
